Principal Thoughts – a 2016 intro

Posted on: 1 February, 2016

In our latest edition of ‘Principal Thoughts’ UCEM Principal, Ashley Wheaton, discusses the latest university college updates and Built Environment industry news for the New Year.

Happy New Year

My last update for 2015 seems like a very long time ago now and a lot has happened for UCEM since we all had our Christmas breaks. This year is set to be a fantastic one for us and I want to start by wishing all our students, alumni, affiliates and more – a very prosperous 2016.

A challenge overseas

Over ten days at the beginning of January, UCEM supported the International Real Estate Challenge (IREC). This competition brings together students from universities including; Chalmers University of Technology; Slovak University of Technology; and Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Science, alongside large organisations from the world of Real Estate such as; Cushman & Wakefield; Colliers International; and Dahler & Company.

The IREC challenge saw 40 students from eight European universities form multi-national consultancy teams to advise on the fictitious relocation of UCEM. The relocation was to one of six European capitals, from Bratislava to Warsaw, and a few colder cities in between.

The event culminated in the top three student consultancy groups presenting their solution at a specially organised conference in Berlin. They had to impress German practitioners, property federations and a special panel of judges including: John Gellatly, UCEM Chairman; Meryl Bonser, Head of Enterprise Business Development; and Judith Gabler, the RICS Head of European Operations. Judith also gave a closing speech on the ‘Future of the Profession’. Keep your eyes peeled for an article to be published about UCEM and IREC by RICS.

A ‘brand’ new us

We’ve well and truly hit the ground running in 2016 and I’m really excited to announce the launch of our new brand and website for University College of Estate Management. Since receiving university college title back in November, we’ve been busy behind the scenes developing a fresh look for UCEM.

Our new website launched officially on Monday 11 January and we’re so pleased to have received lots of great feedback. We want to make it the first stop for accessible, flexible and cost-effective online education – producing leading talent for a better Built Environment. We hope you agree our new site communicates exactly that.
