A LONG PARTNERSHIP
BUILT FOR HISTORY
The University College of Estate Management has a rich and treasured history of supporting the Armed Forces.
During the Second World War, the College of Estate Management (as it was then known) delivered correspondence courses to over 13,000 service personnel at home and abroad. The College also worked with the British Red Cross to deliver courses to prisoners of war across Europe. This scheme provided prisoners with an intellectual stimulus and, at some camps, groups worked together to teach each other – earning themselves the nickname of ‘the barbed wire universities’.
Fast-forward to today and UCEM proudly continues to support the Military.

ARMED FORCES COVENANT
BUILT FOR VALUES
UCEM is proud to hold the Bronze Award, which has been granted by the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme following our signing of the Armed Forces Covenant.
By signing this, UCEM pledges to ensure that those who serve or have served in the military are treated with fairness and respect. We are actively committed to ensuring that all personnel have equal access to education and support for their careers.
We are honoured to have received the Bronze Award for our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant and will continue to uphold its values.
BUILT FOR CAREERS
We currently have students from all branches of the Armed Forces; Army, Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force. We are a preferred supplier to the Ministry of Defence for surveying apprenticeships which allows us to deliver to a number of defence agencies. Our main customer within this agreement is Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).
BUILT FOR PARTNERSHIP
The vision for BuildForce is quite simple: “To inspire and enable service leavers and veterans to pursue a long term career in construction and the built environment, whilst working collaboratively with industry to attract and more importantly retain them”
What is BuildForce?
Buildforce is a UK-wide alliance of employers, industry bodies and charities (currently 100+ strong), established with the mission of transitioning military service leavers and veterans to new careers in the construction sector and built environment.
BuildForce has engaged and inducted over 1,000 service leavers and veterans nationwide. Through identifying transferrable skills, creating bespoke career plans, and assigning industry mentors and work placements, we have helped over 200 military personnel to establish new and fulfilling careers, where their experience directly corresponds to industry needs, labour shortages and skills gaps.
What is UCEM doing?
UCEM is a proud supporter of BuildForce and is committed to supporting military veterans into construction careers. UCEM has four bespoke career road map outlines for construction site management, construction project management, quantity surveying (commercial management) and building surveying in construction.

STUDYING ON DEPLOYMENT
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What if I’m posted abroad?
All our programmes are delivered via supported online education. Our online learning platform, the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is your central resource for week-by-week module planning, e-library, study support materials and module discussion forums to help you achieve your learning outcomes. As you progress, material for each module will be made available on the VLE and supplemented where necessary with e-books. With our programmes you can study anywhere in the world, as long as you have a computer and internet access.
If you’re posted somewhere without reliable internet access then you can discuss your study options with our student engagement team.
Our VLE is a worldwide virtual community, where you can join your fellow students and tutors in discussion forums. Here you can also access Student Central, where you are able to raise queries with us and access frequently asked questions by other students. Your studies are supported by a number of teams working to ensure that you are able to access the support you might need to complete your studies.
Will I need to attend exams?
UCEM no longer uses exams as a form of assessment and students are not required to travel to specific venues for assessments. All assessments will be submitted online.
