Team overview

The Academic Governance team has responsibility for ensuring that there are effective academic governance arrangements in place on UCEM’s Deliberative Committees, Subcommittees and programme meetings. The team also provides comprehensive and professional support and advice including the servicing of the meetings

What do you love most about working in your team?

They are very dedicated and passionate about their jobs and work well collaboratively.

What is the impact of your team’s work?

The impact is to maintain very high quality and standards on all the work within the Academic Governance team which includes policies, procedures and meeting packs and therefore ensuring the students receive a high-quality student experience.

What’s your favourite thing about working for UCEM?

The people who work at UCEM. It is a very supportive environment and employees are always happy to support and assist each other.

Rebecca Shepherd

Academic Registry Manager (Academic Standards)

Team overview

The Academic Standards team is part of the wider Academic Registry department and is responsible for the processing of all results, awards and resubmissions. The team are also responsible for the facilitation of all Boards of Examiners, working closely with UCEM’s External Examiners and academic staff. In addition, the team publish and produce all UCEM result letters, diploma supplements and certificates. Ultimately the goal of the Academic Standards team is to release accurate and timely results to students, whilst ensuring the highest possible standards.

What do you love most about working in your team?

Working with UCEM’s External Examiners and academic staff at the Board of Examiners, seeing the culmination of all the hard work that goes into student success.

What is the impact of your team’s work?

The Academic Standards team are the culmination of the entire student experience with UCEM. Every study hour and all of the hard work by each and every student leads to their final results and award and without this team, there would be no final results and awards.

What’s your favourite thing about working for UCEM?

The supportive network of colleagues and collaborative nature of all staff. Staff are always quick to celebrate in each other’s success and all work towards one goal, a positive student experience.

Linda Thompson

Student Engagement Manager

Team overview

The Student Engagement team are the primary source of student support and are a student’s first point of contact, acting as a triage point for a range of support services available across the institution. We provide clear, helpful, and tailored information, advice, and guidance (IAG) throughout the student journey. To achieve this, we work collaboratively with other teams across UCEM and act with the best interests of students in mind. Our mission is to improve student satisfaction by providing a knowledgeable, accessible, and friendly support service underpinning student success throughout their studies.

What do you love most about working in your team?

That we work very much as a team, we share ideas, experiences and support each other.

What is the impact of your team’s work?

Students use our advice and guidance to successfully complete their studies alongside, most often, working and caring for their friends and families.

What’s your favourite thing about working for UCEM?

The people! They make up the teams who go the extra mile when needed to ensure we have happy students. Also that we are valued for our contribution, regardless of role.

Digital Education and Professional Services

Team overview

This role forms part of our IT service desk, who are the face of our Information Technology team, providing an approachable, supportive, and tenacious approach to technical issues, and providing guidance and advice to staff and students where necessary. The service desk consists of a committed group of people who enjoy helping others and developing their own skills.

What do you love most about working in your team?

The very nature of technology means that no day is the same, and when things become challenging or major incidents happen, the team really pull together and to find solutions. The support you get from your own colleagues is both rewarding and provides a knowledge sharing environment which boosts your skills each and every day.

What is the impact of your team’s work?

As an online institution, technology brings our staff and students together, and enables teams across UCEM to deliver a remarkable experience for all of our students, regardless of their location. The service desk supports the very heart of our wonderful institution and the impact is therefore visible in everything we do.

What’s your favourite thing about working for UCEM?

Everybody cares and it really does feel like a family. We are all committed to the student journey and to student success and this means that everybody supports one another in our collective goal. It is rare to find that atmosphere and the culture we have at UCEM is truly unique.

Bethan Watts

Apprenticeship Outcomes Manager

Team overview

The Apprenticeship Outcomes Officers (AOO) manage a caseload of apprentices. The AOO’s are responsible for supporting a learners journey through from the beginning of their courses right through to end-point assessment and successful completion of their chosen course. AOO’s undertake regularly scheduled progress reviews with each learner and their employers ensuring that the apprentice is developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by their chosen apprenticeship standard. No two days are exactly alike, alongside progress reviews AOO’s also provide much needed information, advice and guidance to the apprentices in their care.

What do you love most about working in your team?

The Apprenticeship Outcomes team is passionate about our apprentice’s journeys. We put the apprentice right at the heart of everything we do and are a highly supportive team. We strive for excellence in all that we do to facilitate a successful outcome for all our apprentices.

What is the impact of your team’s work?

Our team directly support each and every apprentice from day one right through to the end-point assessment. It is extremely rewarding to see apprentices achieve and exceed their goals.

What’s your favourite thing about working for UCEM?

UCEM is a supportive environment to work in. Working with other passionate people to deliver a quality service and working towards achieving common goals is very fulfilling.
