UCEM Property Awards 2020 – Thursday, 15 October
For the first time since the Awards were inaugurated in 1987, this year’s UCEM Property Awards were held online. Speeches and announcements on the day were shared on our social media channels to celebrate the achievements of our award winners and nominees as opposed to a luncheon due to COVID.
So, what are the Property Awards?
Every year since 1987 (with the exception of 2012), UCEM has presented its Property Award to a person who, or an organisation which, has made an outstanding contribution to the property industry.
Property tycoon, Godfrey Bradman, was the inaugural winner of the Property Award and there has been a diverse range of recipients since that first year.
Previous Property Award recipients include: Sir Michael Latham – author of The Latham Report which transformed the modern construction industry; the National Trust; and our Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales.
The Property Award winner is selected by the UCEM Board of Trustees from suggestions made to them by peers within the industry over the course of the year.
Alumni of the Year and Academic Excellence Awards
In 2015, two extra awards were added to the event – the Alumni of the Year Award and Academic Excellence Award.
The Alumni of the Year Award goes to a former UCEM student who has made an outstanding contribution in their early career towards creating a better Built Environment.
The Academic Excellence Award recognises the academic excellence and quality of our students’ research and dissertation submissions.
For each of these awards, six nominees are selected; the alumni award via a public nominations form and the academic award through a review carried out by our Academic Team.
Harold Samuel Research Prize
The most recent addition to the Property Awards was the inclusion of the Harold Samuel Research Prize where we award up to £15,000 towards the recipient/s’s research proposal which must have the potential to change the industry.
Applications are sought in the early part of the year with a judging panel selecting one or more proposals they feel is deserving of funding. Recipients then have 12 months to complete their research project.

Thank you for following UCEM’s Property Awards 2020 event online. This event has been an annual highlight during my six years as UCEM’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees and I have been honoured to host the luncheon each year and meet the many marvellous and exceptional winners we have recognised.
The names added in 2020 extend the roll call of honour of their predecessors. I know you will all join me in congratulating them and we look forward to meeting them in person in 2021 when, with all hope, we will be able to meet in person for the luncheon once again.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at UCEM and all its loyal friends and colleagues for their unwavering support during my time as UCEM Chairman, which draws to a close at the end of the year.
I can reflect with great pride on the many achievements of UCEM during this time, with securing University Title, purchasing our new home, Horizons, and celebrating 100 exceptional years being the stand-out moments. As the University College continues its quest to become the Centre of Excellence for Built Environment Education, I know I leave it in a strong position to face the future and realise this goal.
I wish my very best to you all, and to Amanda Clack as she becomes the 11th Chair of the UCEM Board at the end of this year. Congratulations again to all our worthy winners in 2020.

For Michelle Dobson
“We are all extremely proud of Michelle’s achievements here at Walker Singleton. Undertaking a Professional qualification whilst managing the day-to-day trials and tribulations of the work environment and pressures that go with this is difficult to balance but Michelle has managed to achieve this and I’m sure it will stand her in good stead in her ongoing future development. Well done!”
Director, Walker Singleton
For Joe Ellison
“We are all so proud of Joe’s achievements so far. The hard work he put in to gain First Class Honours from the BSc (Hons) Real Estate Management programme in 2018, then election to Membership of RICS a year later, all whilst working full-time at Pinnacle Surveyors, is testament to his professionalism and drive to make a mark in the industry. His recognition as a Finalist in the Rising Star category at the British Mortgage Awards in Summer 2019 and Winner of RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year 2019 in the Valuation category only goes to show the high regard in which Joe is held with his peers and in the industry as a whole. As a biased Dad (and his boss!), I couldn’t be more proud and pleased of his achievements; his Mum, partner Ben, brother Jacob, and all his friends and colleagues think the same and wish him the best of luck for his nomination in the UCEM Alumni of the Year category.”
